Thursday, August 31, 2006
The Kankakee County Voices Leadership Committee (VLC), chaired by Pam Debono, and composed of members from business, social service, media and non-profit organizations, will be hosting a Community Forum to provide the public with an opportunity to have an open dialogue with candidates for state office.
Illinois legislative candidates from the greater Kankakee area have been invited to participate in the forum scheduled for Thursday, September 21 at 7:30 am. to 9:00 am. at the Kankakee Area YMCA, 1075 North Kennedy Drive in Kankakee. The forum is open to the public; all are invited and welcome to attend.
Invited candidates include Senator Debbie Halvorson of Chicago Heights and her challenger Joe Maun of Steger, 40th senate district; Representative Careen Gordon of Coal City and her challenger Jason Briscoe of Minooka, 75th representative district; and Representative Lisa Dugan of Kankakee and her challenger Sam Nicholos, also of Kankakee, 79th representative district.
The Kankakee County VLC Community Forum is one of many across the state being sponsored by Voices for Illinois Children, a non-profit, non-partisan advocacy organization. Voices believes that for children to do well, their families must do well. And for families to do well, it takes support from individuals, communities, business and government. Discussion topics include: Education Policies, Family Economic Security, Physical and Mental Health Care, and Restoration of Funds cut from vital children’s services.
VLCs currently exist in the following communities: Chicago, Central Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, East St. Louis, DuPage County, Joliet, Kankakee County, La Moine Valley, Mt. Vernon, North Shore, Oak Park and River Forest, Peoria, Southern Illinois, Springfield, Stephenson County, Highland Park/Lake Forest, Quad-Cities and West Central Illinois.
