Teen REACH received Learn and Serve Grant

Wednesday, July 21, 2004

The I-KAN Regional Office of Educationís Teen REACH after school program recently received a $5000 grant from the Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service Illinois Community-Based Learn and Serve project that will be used to construct a walking path around the new 4,649 square ft. playground at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in Hopkins Park.

The playground was part of community KaBoom build last summer, however, there were insufficient funds to complete the walking path at that time. Approximately 50 students and community volunteers from the Teen REACH sites at the Garden of Prayer Youth Center in Momence and Hope House in Hopkins Park, will lead the project. Work will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 26.

In addition to the walking path, Teen REACH youth also will plant trees and shrubs around the path.

Community partners involved in the project are Cora Woods, director of Hope House, Vurnice Maloney, director of Garden of Prayer Youth Center, Genova Singleton, supervisor of Pembroke Township, Nick Leep of the Crossroads Community Church in Schererville, Ind., Cambridge Construction of Indiana, Jesse Walker of the Church of the Cross in Hopkins Park, Christ Deliverance Church in Hopkins Park, Carole Franke, youth opportunities director for the I-KAN Regional Office of Education, and David Cook and Debra Terrill of the Kankakee Kultivators. Aqua Illinois Water Company donated bottled water for project build day.

The Hope House Teen REACH site in Hopkins Park and Garden of Prayer Youth Center Teen REACH are funded in part through the Illinois Department of Human Services. They are two of four Teen REACH sites administered by the I-KAN Regional Office of Education and sponsored by the Pledge for Life Partnership. Teen REACH after school programs also are held at the Kankakee Area YWCA and the Community Resource Center in Kankakee. For more information, contact the Pledge for Life Partnership at 936-4606.
