Prevention peer leaders trained, parent night scheduled

Tuesday, October 26, 2004

Sixth grade students from Grant Park Middle School have been trained as peer leaders in the Slick Tracy Home Team Program – part of a comprehensive, research-based underage drinking prevention curriculum proven to deter the onset of alcohol use by youth.

The program is offered through the Pledge for Life Partnership – Life Education Center program to 17 participating schools in Kankakee and Iroquois counties. Components for 6th, 7th and 8th graders focus on parent communication, peer influence and community response to adolescent alcohol use. It was developed by the Hazelden Foundation and the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health and was evaluated in the largest and most rigorous alcohol use prevention trial ever funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Students from Grant Park Middle School who will serve as peer leaders are Kelly Anderson, Jessica Claussen, Brett Buttle, Josh Junker, Kristen Garey, Nicole Proctor, Josh Mitchell and Tyler Williamson.

Slick Tracy’s primary focus is to get parents and their children talking about the dangers of alcohol use. At the end of instruction, parent family events are held where students
share what they have learned with their parents and the community. A Slick Tracy Family Poster Night is scheduled for Grant Park Middle School at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 9 in the cafeteria.
